Conventions Analysis of a Double Page Spread

LIIAR Analysis:

Language: The dark colours of  the picture in this double page spread suggests that the story in the article is quite dark, the artist, ASAP Rocky's, costume suggests he could be quite a dark person. Putting aside the fact that he is very famous and in a magazine article, his costume shows us that he is most likely to be very rich, we can gather this from his golden grills (mouth piece), chains, bracelets and rings.

Institution: The company that produces Q Magazine, Bauer Media, also create a lot of different forms of media, from magazines like Q, Heat and Karrang! to television channels like 4 Music and The Box. The fact that the company gets so much income is probably why they can satisfy their audience by putting very famous influential artists, like ASAP Rocky, in their magazines.

Ideology: In the article we see ASAP Rocky dressed in a way very typical of the black american youth, even if a person reading the article that doesn't know who he is could probably take a guess as to what type of music he makes. The way he is dressed and his body language also raises the stereotype of a mischievous gang member, with his hand gesture being interpreted as a gang sign perhaps.

Audience: The audience that this article targets is that of a younger group, however as most of the artist's music will be explicit the age range would not be too young it would probably be people around 16-25 years old. Q magazine usually features musicians of all genres so that the magazine has something for everyone, however this approach could be problematic as people may not pay around £5 for just one article that they are interested in.

Representation: The colour scheme for this article is mostly black, this suggests representations of darkness within the artist's music. It is also quite stereotypical of the hip hop genre to wear a lot of black - as seen with many other hip hop artists - and using a lot of black in things like music videos, posters and album artwork.
