Creating/Designing Cover
I used the lasso tool to cut out small, left over bits of my background after using quick selection tool to cut out the majority of it.
I used the text box to make my masthead and sell lines
I used the colour picker to change the colour of my font. I changed the text colour to yellow because because when i tried everything in the burgundy colour it looked like there was too much burgundy on the page. I then proceeded to put an outer glow on my sell lines/feature stories and also on my plug.
I double clicked on my main image layer and selected drop shadow to but a shadow on my main image to make it blend in with the background more.
Finally I used the ellipse tool to create a circle to put the contents of my plug (Free Book Mark) inside. I contemplated making the circle yellow to match the title colour however I noticed that one of the conventions of the plug is to stand out from the rest of the magazine.

- Masthead font/size - Stencil std, 72pt

Photographs for Front Cover
I took quite few background images so I had choice to see what worked perfectly with my main image.
I used two models in the process of finding my main image so i had even more choice in putting both the main image and background together.
In most of my main images the models are holding props, i did this to give the main image more school/college like look and feel to it.
I was going to use pictures of the stairs because they are what most students use everyday and they are familiar, the stairs are what people will associate with college making them a good background for a college magazine.
This is the main image that I will be using on my college magazine front cover.

College Magazine Evaluation
Evaluation
LIIAR Analysis:
Language: The format of my magazine is that of a college magazine, the name of the college (Wyke) in the masthead (convention) makes this apparent. I used the image of Josh (student in my year) as my magazine model, he isn't holding a folder and a note pad, this strengthens the college magazine genre and makes it even more apparent. The sell lines I used are things that would concern students giving advice on this like "helpful tips to deal with" exam stress. The positioning of the camera means that my model can look straight through it as if it is only looking at the reader of the magazine.
Institution: The institution for this magazine would be Wyke College as that is where I produced the magazine itself. This magazine could be used to interest more people to come to college or persuade students to take on board the message behind the magazine as a whole.
Ideology: The ideology/message here is that education is good and positive, this can be shown by how my model is smiling in the image, this shows that he is happy at Wyke college and happy with his choice of education.
Audience: The audience of my magazine is students, on average, 16-18 years old. This target audience is suitable for my magazine as it targets the majority age in the college making everything that is included in the magazine. Also the message I am trying to put across with my college magazine is that education is positive and good, this audience is who needs to know this.
Representation: The model I used represents my audience that I am targeting to sell my magazine to. It represents all of the students at Wyke and shows them to be happy. My model also represents the institution in terms of making people want to come to college, because if my model is happy it will persuade other people to come to the college because they would want to be happy like the model on the front cover of the college's magazine.
What would I change?: If I was to change/edit my college magazine cover I would probably change a few things. The first thing I would is my title, I would change the font size of my title so that it overhangs my main image in more of a conventional way. The second thing i would change is the brightness of the yellow used for the colour of my sell lines because at the moment they are quite blurry and dull and they don't stand out. The biggest thing i would change is the background location, i would change this to be more recognizable and inside the actual college and not outside.
How was Photoshop?: Photoshop, at first, was very difficult in the process of making my college magazine because I had never used the software before, even now I still don't have the hang of it. I would like to use it more.

Basics of Photoshop
I used the lasso tool to crop out the original pictures background, after this I used the I used the polygonal lasso to tidy up rough edges of the model's hair as it did not blend well with the orange background. I used the bucket tool to make my background a similar colour to the model's shirt.
I used the text tool (T) to create my msthead nd sell lines, I then used the select tool to move my texts round and fit them to wear I want them to be. The font I used for my masthead was Wide Latin. The font i used for my sell lines was Verdana. The colour of my writing are contrasting colours, I did this as I though it would be effective.
To get my plug I used the ellipse tool to create the blue circle and I then created a text box in the circle to add what is included in my plug.
I got my bar code image and scaled it down to size.
I later decided to to move my masthead to the left side of my front cover and move the plug to right side and move it slightly off the page, to fit conventions. Also making my masthead smaller reduced the amount that my sell lines covered my image.
I also decide to add a drop shadow to the image to make it look less photoshopped and to make it look more natural.
The last thing I changed was rotating and scaling my bar code to make it look more realistic.

Mood Board
For my mood board I wanted to display everything i thought of when I thought of the words 'college magazine', i put in pictures of American College logos and an American college football magazine. I also used pictures of magazines to compare layouts for the Rolling Stone and Thrasher Magazine to my own. Additionally I also used pictures of students on my mood board as I knew that is what my main image would be.

Semiotics and LIIAR Analysis
Semiotics/LIIAR Analysis
Denotation: The object itself.
Connotations: The message/meaning behind the object/denotation.
LIIAR Analysis of the JOOP! Real Men Wear Pink Advert:
Language: This advert uses a sort of reverse psychology in order to get people in the target audience (late teen males to late 20s males) to buy the product; "Real Men Wear Pink" makes the targetted males want to be considered a 'real man' in the eye of the media and so they will go out a buy this JOOP! Homme aftershave.
Institution: JOOP!: The fact that the organisation is 'JOOP!' and is a large well-known company in the world of fragrances- in this case men's aftershave- plays a huge part in the target audience wanting to buy this product. The fact that JOOP! is large and well-know usually means that their products will be expensive, this suggests that the target males could think that their advertised slogan and opinion of 'real mean wear pink' is true making them want to buy it even more.
Ideology: In this advert the man in the picture has a healthy toned and muscular body, so basically the stereotyped body for the target audience and what every man wants to look like, this is used to make the audience want to buy the product because they will think that if they use this they will automatically look like this. The same can be said for the way the man has a woman draped over his back.
Audience: The text at the top of the ad appeals to the audience in the way that it tells young adult males that don't have this aftershave that they are not 'real men' and this will motivate them to buy the aftershave to become one. The model targets the audience because at the age that is targeted a muscular, healthy body is what most men want, also if this is what is considered as a 'real' man's body it manipulates men that age into thinking that if they buy and wear this particular aftershave they will have a body like this, this is also why the model is such an important component to the advert.
This perfume is targeted at young adults because it is the age where males will be wanting to look attractive for women and look for women and if they would see an advert like this they will want to buy for it to help them with their search for girls.
Representation:The colour scheme of the advert is mostly pink, this suggests slight representations of love and romance (pink), it could however contrast this as we see the male is not interested at all so it is therefore not romantic . The male's body language in the picture shows us that by wearing this aftershave he gets a lot of girls, however by looking straight into the camera and the look he uses shows us that he isn't bothered by the beautiful girl hanging off his back suggesting that he just thinks that it is just another girl falling all over him. The position of the product is effective too, by positioning the aftershave bottle at the front right of the advert makes the product stand out. As a whole the advert is representing he time in the audiences life where they feel that they will need help to find the kind of women that this aftershave "attracts" so to speak.
